In the Spotlight: Áine Slowey.
Get to know our analyst team one at a time in our new exclusive interviews
Áine Slowey is a Senior Analyst within our disease team based here in London. Originally from Ireland, Áine has been a part of the team since 2012, joining as an analyst and has since moved up the ranks to become a Senior Analyst. We’ve put Áine “In the Spotlight” so you can find out more about how she spends her time at Datamonitor Healthcare and what she’s excited about in 2015….
What is your background?
I did my undergraduate at Trinity College in Dublin where I got a BA (Hons) in Medicinal Chemistry. From there I moved to the University of Oxford and completed a DPhil in Organic Chemistry, focusing on the synthesis of inositol polyphosphates.
What is your role here at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I’m a Senior Analyst at Datamonitor Healthcare on the disease team. My work to date has predominantly been focused on the oncology market, so I follow all of the new developments and novel pipeline therapies in this market and then add analysis about these products to the content that I produce.
So far, I’ve mostly worked on colorectal cancer, melanoma, HER2-positive breast cancer and renal cell cancer. However, I have also written some content on other oncology indications and attended two international conferences on hematology.
Within these areas, what has been your most interesting research project?
Probably melanoma as it’s a very interesting disease area with quite a lot of pipeline activity, especially with the new wave of novel immunotherapies in development in this indication. Before 2011, there weren’t any targeted therapies available for this disease and in the last four years six new drugs have been approved, so it’s quite an interest market at the minute.
I also think that the colorectal cancer market is very interesting. It is such a common type of cancer, so it’s interesting to see how the disease is treated in the different countries that we look at and and how the type of drugs that are predominately used differ in each different country.
What do you like most about working at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I think we have a really great team of analysts. Our team is really passionate about what we do; everyone has a genuine interest in the pharmaceutical industry and all of the novel developments in the market. It is very enjoyable to work in a place where everyone cares a lot about the quality of our product and the service that we provide for our clients.
Why do you think our customers like Datamonitor Healthcare?
I think it is the quality of the analysis that we offer that our clients really appreciate. All of our analysis is prepared by our in-house team of experts, who have specialist knowledge about the particular disease areas that they are working on. That expertise really shows in to the quality of the content that we produce.
We are also very transparent with our sources and our methodology. We’re very approachable, so if any of our clients have any questions about where we have got a certain piece of information from, why we have come to a particular conclusion, or why we scored something a certain way, we are more than happy to talk to them or send them an email and answer any questions that they have. I think that it is this level of customer service that really distinguishes us from our competitors.
What do you think your greatest achievement has been since working at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I think that it probably was being named by City AM as one of the top 20 analysts to follow on Twitter (see the article here) because I enjoy using social media to follow the pharmaceutical industry and get up instant updates about what is happening in the market, if there are any new developments or new drug approvals, or if there is any interesting information being released by some of the pharmaceutical companies.
I use Twitter on a regular basis and I enjoy interacting with our clients and other pharmaceutical market analysis to find out what they think of market-shaping events.
What are you most excited about this year in the pharmaceutical market?
I think that it is going to be another interesting year for the immunoncology market. Last year there were a few big drug approvals and I think that this trend is set to continue this year with even more drug approvals and some interesting label expansions. It’ll be interesting to observe how this market takes shape and the market dynamics between all of these novel drugs.
Outside work, what do you enjoy doing?
I’ve recently been involved in some charity projects at Datamonitor Healthcare, which I have really enjoyed doing. I was a member of a team that raised almost £4k for The Prince’s Trust, so I am quite proud of that.
I also enjoy going out into the countryside whenever I have some free time and going hiking and visiting nice places around the UK. I also enjoy going back to Ireland as often as possible and visiting my family and friends over there.
Any New Year’s resolutions for 2015?
My New Year’s resolution was to go to the gym more and to become a bit fitter and healthier, but I’m not sure how well it is going in this cold weather!
