In the Spotlight: Colin White.
Get to know our analyst team one at a time in our new exclusive interviews
Colin joined Datamonitor Healthcare in 2009 and has been our resident oncology expert since then. As the Lead Analyst in this market, he is kept incredibly busy keeping up with new developments and interest in this market. We’ve put Colin “In the Spotlight” so you can find out more about why he’s interested in the pharmaceutical’s market and why he thinks Datamonitor Healthcare is the place to develop your knowledge…
What is your background?
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Glasgow, and I have a Master’s degree and PHD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Missouri. After that, I then worked as a lecturer in Chemistry at the same university. I was teaching an introduction to chemistry and inorganic chemistry. I then worked as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Maryland, where I was researching catalytic oxidation reactions. When I left my post-doc, I decided to come back to the UK and it was then that I started working for Datamonitor Healthcare, in 2009.
What first interested you in pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical market?
From my background you can see I’ve always been interest in chemistry, and going back to my degree where I studied medicinal chemistry I had an interest in drugs and pharmaceuticals. As there was always an interest, when an opportunity arose to write about the market I thought it would be something that would really interest me and it has done and continues to do so.
What is your role at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I am the Lead Analyst of Oncology. I’ve been involved in the oncology research since I joined in 2009. This basically means I am responsible for all of the oncology content that is produced by Datamonitor Healthcare. So all of the syndicated research, forecasts, news pieces, white papers, conference coverage – everything that we produce in oncology, I am responsible for managing and delivering that content.
What do you think makes Datamonitor Healthcare stand out against its competitors?
I think it’s our capacity with our website being able to respond to market events and update our content and analysis in a timely way. We produced several hundred updates like that last year after market events happened, so it’s become much more of a market monitoring service. I think that makes us stand out against our competitors.
What has been your highlight, so far, for working for Datamonitor Healthcare?
I think one of the highlights for me has been going to attend the ASCO conference in America. The highlight of that is going and seeing the data being presented at the conference and seeing all the activity in development and everything that’s going on in drugs for oncology. I’ve found this to be a very interesting experience and a really motivating one as well. It’s exciting to see all that’s happening in the oncology market there.
What makes Datamonitor Healthcare such a good brand to work for?
The fact that we’re trying to do good quality, in-depth analysis on the pharmaceuticals market and if, like me, that’s something you’re interested in then it’s a good company to develop your knowledge and expertise on the pharmaceuticals market. We also work closely with our clients to help them solve their problems and assist them with their needs, and that’s rewarding in itself.
What trends in the pharmaceutical market will you be keeping an eye on in 2015?
Specifically, I will be keeping an eye on developments in the field on immuno-oncology. This is a field where you’re trying to help the body’s own immune system to attach cancer, or to better defend against cancer. There’s been a lot of recent developments and exciting results with drugs like PD-1 inhibitors, and CAR-T cell therapy. There’ll be more developments this year and I’m keeping an eye on this as it’s an extremely exciting field.
I’m also currently producing a Immuno-Oncology Overview report as well, which will hopefully be available in May.
Finally, what exciting plans for you have for 2015?
Well with Easter coming up I’m looking forward to going back to Glasgow for the long weekend to see my friends and family. I’m from there so it’s always nice to head back when I can.
A big thank you to Colin for taking the time to talk to us!
