In the Spotlight: Kate Roche.
Get to know our analyst team one at a time in our new exclusive interviews
Kate joined Datamonitor Healthcare at the beginning of 2014 as the newest member of our primary research team based in the London office. As Research Executive she’s kept incredibly busy managing our many market research projects across different disease areas and works closely with our entire R&A team. We’ve put Kate “In the Spotlight” to find out what really goes on in our primary research team and her particular pharmaceutical passions…
What is your background?
I’ve always had a passion for the pharmaceutical sciences which influenced my decision to study for my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience at the University of Leeds. My dissertation involved testing novel drugs in the prevention of neural cell death in the lab, which was fascinating. I decided to pursue a career in the business side of the pharmaceutical industry in which I could apply and increase my knowledge in the treatment of human diseases.
What is your role here at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I’m part of the primary research team, working alongside the analysts and epidemiologists who together make up the research and analysis team. I project manage primary research studies from supporting questionnaire design, right through to data delivery.
I work alongside the analysts on a range of different disease areas simultaneously, and I also work closely with our field work providers on key stages in the research process to ensure rigorous quality control checks and appropriate implementation of our methodologies to provide our clients with high quality data that feeds into our content and analysis.
Within these areas, what has been your most interesting research project?
Being in primary research I get to work on a variety of different projects which is interesting in itself. However if I had to pick one I’d say I loved working on the Parkinson’s Disease project which strongly relates to my degree. I find the nervous system really intriguing as there’s still so much more about the brain to discover and understand. For example, with CNS disorders in particular one of the main obstacles pharma companies face is the effective drug penetration of the blood brain barrier – which I find really interesting
Also I think it’s exciting to be on the business side of the pharmaceutical industry and I enjoy gaining physician and key opinion leader insights into their treatment strategies, pipeline drugs and hot events in the pharmaceutical market.
What do you like most about working at Datamonitor Healthcare?
I enjoy the variety in my role. There’s always lots going on and I’m constantly learning new things, whether it be a new disease area, tackling unpredictable situations that arise during fieldwork, or just working alongside my team members who are all extremely intelligent and interesting to be around.
Datamonitor Healthcare is always looking to challenge its staff so we can be the best we can be and I am lucky to be working alongside so many talented individuals.
Why do you think our customers like Datamonitor Healthcare?
I think we’re a very customer focused company. We have transparency with all our content. From a market research standpoint we are transparent about our methodologies and it’s important for us that our clients understand how the data and information is sourced for our patient based forecasts, treatment algorithms and general insight.
We also work with a trusted fieldwork provider for our large scale projects, meaning we have representative sample sizes allowing us to generalise our findings which makes us stand out amongst our competitors.
What do you think your greatest achievement has been since working at Datamonitor Healthcare?
A number of things really, I think it’s an achievement in itself to be able to work on all aspects of a market research process and to work on several projects simultaneously – all of which can be at different stages in the market research process! Keeping one step ahead is definitely vital.
Another achievement underway is that I’m currently studying for an advanced certificate in market research, alongside my work. I’m always looking for ways to expand my knowledge and develop my skill set. I’m excited to bring new found expertise to the team, sharing and applying my learnings.
Outside work, what do you enjoy doing?
I am a sucker for shopping. I love keeping up with the latest trends, rummaging through vintage shops to find unique items of clothing. I have so many shoes it should be a crime!
I also like to attend comedy shows as I always enjoy having a good laugh in a great atmosphere.
A big thank you to Kate for taking the time to talk to us!
